CUEVA LAS YESERAS

This cave is of a superior category has room for 8 guests. It is hotel-style accommodation with 4 independent double rooms, each with an en-suite bathroom. Every room has the name of a local plant (PARAÍSO, RETAMA, TARAL and ESPARTO) that grow in the semi-desert like landscape that surrounds our cave resort.

THE MEANING OF THE NAME “LAS YESERAS”

In former days the dwellers of the caves were making plaster using an ancient method. The soils in this area are rich in transparent flattened gypsum crystals called “espejuelos” (= little mirrors) and the locals knew how to transform them into plaster for construction. This was mainly for their own needs or to be used by people in the local neighborhood. The espejuelos was extracted from the hills and kilns were excavated directly into the rock to cook the crystals and produce gypsum in powder. Therefore they called the place “Las Yeseras”. This craft existed until the 1960s when the production of plaster began to be commercialised. At that moment the skilled production previously used ceased to be profitable and the production of this type of plaster was abandoned. Nowadays you can still find remains of the extraction and storage of thiatural resource in the area.

THE PLANTS

The locals also made use of the autochthonous plants. With RETAMA they built ledges into their façades to protect them against the rain. There was a time when the treatment of ESPARTO to prepare it for handcrafts or construction materials became an important industry. Until the 1950s most of the tools and appliances for agriculture were made with this material. Many households still have objects made of esparto grass such as baskets, fans for the fire, sandals and other accessories. Now there are only a few people left in the region who work with this material.

THE ROOMS

In the Cave Las Yeseras every room is completely independent and has a double bed with its  own private bathroom (with bath, shower, hairdryer and heated towel rail). The rooms have central heating, TV & DVD player. The rooms PARAISO and RETAMA have their own open fire place. There are no doors between the bedrooms and bathrooms as the air circulation in the cave is very important. RETAMA has windows and the other rooms have skylights. It is possible to add an extra bed in the room ESPARTO for a small supplement (12€/night).

THE COMMUNAL AREAS

This “cave hotel” has communal areas. There is an infrared sauna with a chill out space and a shower. The relaxation area has a big window and comfortable pillows. Both children and adults love to take a nap here. The entrance hall is also a small living room with an open fire, seating area and table. Recently we fitted the cave-house with a kitchen to satisfy our long stay guests and to offer tea and coffee making facilities. The kitchen is equipped with cooking utensils & crockery, fridge, oven, toaster and a coffee maker. There is also a lovely big terrace and a porch with views over the surrounding landscape and the mountain range of Sierra de Baza.

There is free WI-FI in the communal areas. Please be aware that as we are in a rural area it doesn’t always work very well. The first lot of firewood is free, thereafter you can order the lot for 11€. We can provide a small barbecue by request.

The cave is ideal for small groups of friends or family where everybody has privacy but can also enjoy gathering together too. This can be very useful if you are staying with work colleagues.
